Recent deaths of riders at Tristate parks
June 9, 1991: A Toledo-area woman fell to her death from the Flight Commander at Kings Island. State investigators faulted the manufacturer, not the amusement park, for improperly designed restraints that allowed solo riders in two-person capsules to slide under shoulder and lap harnesses.
The woman also was responsible, investigators concluded, because she had a blood-alcohol level of .30 percent, three times the legal level for drivers.
May 28, 1994: A Michigan teen-ager died after fainting while riding the Wildcat roller coaster at Cedar Point in Sandusky, Ohio. A coroner attributed the death to a heart condition.
Aug. 11, 1996: A 57-year-old woman was killed and her 4-year-old granddaughter was paralyzed after a miniature train derailed at the Old Indiana Fun-n-Water Park in Thorntown, Ind. The ride had been approved by state inspectors, but areview found the train's brakes were broken and anti-derailment devices were missing. Three inspectors later resigned. The accident led to tougher regulations and training requirements for inspectors.
May 23, 1997: A 14-year-old girl died after suffering an asthma attack as she left a double-loop roller coaster ride at Geauga Lake in Aurora, Ohio. Park officials said the attack wasn't related to the ride.
