Newport senior quarterback Charlie Smith led the surprisingly easy city championship victory with his usual ground/air attack. He threw for 70 yards and two TDs to complement his 175-yard, two-TD rushing effort.
Last year, Smith threw for 1,194 yards and 11 TDs, and rushed for 1,240 yards and 18 TDs.
Nick Partin also scored twice Friday for Newport, rushing for 144 yards on nine carries.
Newport's defense pitched in with a pair of interceptions.
