Rape evidence scrutinized for link to other assaults

DEERFIELD TOWNSHIP Sheriff's deputies are trying to determine whether the rape of a Landen woman early Saturday is linked to a recent string of sexual assaults in Warren and Hamilton counties.
A 45-year-old woman told detectives a man, who apparently broke into her Millbank Row residence, attacked her as she slept about 5 a.m.
She could not describe the unmasked man because it was dark and the suspect covered her face, Warren County Sheriff's Lt. Jerry Mays said. The woman was treated at a hospital and released.
Evidence from the assault was sent Monday to the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Identification and Investigation in London, to compare with items collected in three unsolved Mason rapes that have been linked through DNA to the same man.
We are looking into the possibility they are connected. We can't say they are just yet, Lt. Mays said.
Police in Montgomery also are awaiting comparisons involving the July assault of a 6-year-old girl in her Winds subdivision home.
Suspect described
The three Mason attacks occurred in the same neighborhood:
On April 14, a 27-year-old single mother was raped while sleeping in her Butler-Warren Road home.
In July 1998, a 12-year-old girl was raped in a nearby back yard.
In April 1998, a 14-year-old girl was raped in her house.
The attacker in the three rapes in Mason was described as a white man in his mid- to late 30s, 5-foot-10, with blue eyes and a red moustache. He wore a ski mask when committing the crimes.
The string of attacks including two others in which women in Sharonville and Blue Ash managed to escape from their assailant prompted police and prosecutors in both counties this month to form a joint task force to further investigate the crimes.
