Cincinnati SAT verbal score rises


Figure ahead of U.S. average

        High school seniors in Cincinnati Public Schools scored higher this year on the SAT, an increase administrators trumpeted as proof that district reforms are starting to work.

        A 12-point jump on the verbal portion of the test put the CPS seniors 14 points ahead of the national average.

OTHER DISTRICTS
  As comparison, average scores in other Ohio urban districts included:
  • Columbus: 487 verbal, 476 math. About 15 percent of seniors took the test.
  • Dayton: 447 verbal, 429 math. About 20 percent of seniors took the test.
  • Toledo: 507 verbal, 510 math. About 4 percent of seniors took the test.
        About 530 of Cincinnati's seniors took the test, which was offered several times in the past year. On average, they scored 519 on the verbal section and 505, one point higher than last year, in math.

        Those scores were higher than many of Ohio's urban districts, and on the verbal portion, 14 points higher than the national average of 505. CPS students were six points below the national average of 511 in math.

        Ohio's seniors overall did better on average than CPS seniors, scoring 534 in verbal and 538 in math, according to the College Board, which administers the test. About 25 percent of seniors statewide took the test.

        Students at Walnut Hills High School and the School for Creative and Performing Arts snagged the district's highest scores.

        “We are on the right track, working smarter and getting better results,” Superintendent Steven Adamowski said.

        Under a new School Accountability Plan, schools that persistently fail face overhaul or intervention. And a new student-based budgeting plan gives schools more incentive to raise results because they lose money as they lose students.

        The SAT is a standardized test that many colleges and universities use in deciding admittance and financial aid. Test takers tend to be school districts' smartest students.

        Many Midwestern schools prefer the rival ACT test instead of the SAT to gauge students' academic aptitude, so fewer students take the SAT.
