DeWine gives endorsement to McCain
The Associated Press
WASHINGTON Breaking with almost all of his Ohio Republican colleagues, U.S. Sen. Mike DeWine on Thursday announced he's backing fellow Sen. John McCain of Arizona for president rather than George W. Bush.
Mr. DeWine said he'll make his endorsement official today at an appearance with Mr. McCain in Concord, N.H.
The first-term senator said he believes Mr. McCain's experience, particularly his foreign policy knowledge and military background, make him most suited to be the GOP nominee.
I am endorsing him because I have known him for 17 years and I think he would be a great president, Mr. DeWine said. This is the man who in my opinion should be commander-in-chief.
Mr. DeWine said he disagrees with some of Mr. McCain's positions particularly his campaign finance proposal but overall respects and supports him. Mr. McCain's bill would ban unlimited political contributions known as soft money and restrict issue advertisements by outside groups seeking to influence voters.
He is decisive. He has guts, Mr. DeWine said.
Mr. Bush never actually asked Mr. DeWine for his endorsement, the senator said. Nonetheless, he said he attempted to contact Mr. Bush, the Texas governor, before revealing his intentions.
Mr. DeWine said he'd been pondering his endorsement for more than a month, since U.S. Rep. John Kasich of Westerville abandoned his own White House dreams.
