St. Antoninus rebuilds school

Year-long project will cost $3M

BY CHRISTINE WOLFF
The Cincinnati Enquirer

A $3 million expansion that begins next week at St. Anto ninus School will finally put to rest two World War II-era barracks the school has been using for a half-century.

A groundbreaking ceremony will be 10:30 a.m. Sundayat the school, 5427 Julmar Drive, Green Township. A model will be on display, and the architects will be available to explain the project.

Called “Under One Roof,” the project will add 19,000 square feet to the school and bring together classrooms and other activities now held in three buildings, said the Rev. Donald McCarthy, St. Antoninus' pastor.

The project, to be completed in August, will include six classrooms, a library, lunch room, science lab, computer lab, music and art rooms, and offices, as well as the renovation of 17 existing classrooms.

It's the first major renovation at the school, which enrolls 590 students in kindergarten through eighth grade.

The last section of the old school to come down will be the barracks that school offi cials obtained from Wright-Patterson military base in Dayton. The two barracks were joined as one building and “served us well,” said Tony Rosiello, a parishioner on the fund-raising committee.

Students will attend classes while work goes on.

“We'll muddle through the construction. The contractors have been very cooperative about working this out,” Mr. Rosiello said. “The new building addresses all kinds of issues, such as security.”

About $2.6 million has been raised; donations to the campaign are welcome. To donate, mail to St. Antoninus Church, 1500 Linneman Road, Cincinnati 45238.
