Lloyd grad big in U of L win

BY NEIL SCHMIDT
The Cincinnati Enquirer

LEXINGTON, Ky. — Nine Greater Cincinnatians are on Kentucky's football roster. Saturday, though, Louisville's lone local had the last laugh.

Charles Sheffield, a senior receiver from Lloyd High School, caught eight passes for a career-high 118 yards and a touchdown in Louisville's 56-28 victory.

“We lost (to UK) the past two years, so I really wanted to win this game in my senior year,” he said. “We didn't expect anything less. We were definitely out for revenge this year.”

UK got significant contributions from four local players, including Derek Smith's ballyhooed debut.

Smith, who played on kickoff coverage and kickoff returns, was on the field at game's start and was already in the offense on the game's second play. The tight end made a first down with a third-down catch on the game's first drive and ended with two catches for 4 yards.

“It was great, everything I thought it would be — except for a win,” he said. “I just wanted to get my first catch out of the way so I could settle down.”

Sophomore linebacker Jamal White (Colerain) was the only local starter for UK. On Louisville's second offensive play, White recovered a Frank Moreau fumble, and he finished with five unassisted tackles.

A.J. Simon (Newport Central Catholic), the UK senior fullback, rushed for 8 yards and a first down on a fake punt from his own 14-yard line.

Vincent Harrison (Princeton), a UK sophomore wideout, played briefly but didn't catch a pass.

COUCH HONORED: Tim Couch, an All-American quarterback last year at UK, returned Saturday for a ceremony to retire his jersey.

“It's a tremendous honor,” he said. “I would love to be out there today, but I think it was time for me to move on.”
