Two still in hospital following pileup

Car-fire smoke left road clouded

The Cincinnati Enquirer

A 25-year-old man and a 4-year-old boy remained hospitalized Sunday, more than 24 hours after they were hurt in a four-car pileup on northbound Interstate 75, about 11/2 miles south of Walton.

Kenton County police officers say the crash happened about 1:30 p.m. Saturday. A northbound vehicle pulled to the side of the roadway and caught fire, causing heavy black smoke across the highway.

Several northbound drivers had stopped because of limited visibility when a northbound minivan struck a stopped Pontiac Grand Am in the rear. The mini van hit an embankment, rolled over and came to rest on its wheels, said Detective Darrin Gilvin, spokesman for the county police department.

The crash caused the Grand Am to strike two other vehicles and ejected the driver, Shay Irwin of Cincinnati, and two of his passengers, 3-year-old Isaiah Irwin and 4-year-old Parker Irwin. The Irwins and the minivan driver, Charles Lynch of Fort Thomas, were taken to hospitals.

Shay Irwin was taken by helicopter to University Hospital, where he was in fair condition Sunday. The Irwin boys were taken to St. Luke Hospital West in Florence and later to Children's Hospital. Isaiah was discharged Sunday, while Parker remained in serious condition. Mr. Lynch was treated at St. Luke West and released.

Those in the other two vehicles were not injured. The driver of the car that caught fire also wasn't hurt, Detective Gilvin said.

The Kenton County Serious Traffic Accident Reconstruction Unit was investigating.Detective Gilvin said Sunday that he doesn't expect any of the drivers to be cited.
