Bookie's lawyer says scuffle 'overstated'

BY SHEILA McLAUGHLIN
The Cincinnati Enquirer

LEBANON — Allegations that Pete Rose's former bookie assaulted a police officer might just be a “misunderstanding,” his lawyer said Tuesday after a judge rebuffed a plea to release Ron Peters from jail.

“I think that Ron, although he got himself in a bit of a problem, I don't think he necessarily did what they are claiming he did,” attorney Bill Knapp said.

“It just might have been overstated what happened. I know Ron did not intend to do anything to the officer.”

Mr. Peters, 42, of Franklin, has been jailed in Warren County in lieu of $50,000 bond since Aug. 31, when he was charged with assaulting Springboro Officer Kelly Denlinger during a traffic stop at Lytle Five Points and Crossley roads.

Police said Mr. Peters became disorderly when Officer Denlinger ordered him out of the car for field sobriety tests. The two scuffled, and Mr. Peters ran off after elbowing Officer Denlinger in the face and knocking him to the ground.
