Cause of apartment complex fire not yet found
BY RANDY McNUTT
The Cincinnati Enquirer
FAIRFIELD Investigators said Tuesday it could take several days to determine the cause of a Saturday fire that damaged an apartment building in the Cobblestone Grove complex off Woodridge Boulevard.
We don't want to be premature on the cause, said Deputy Fire Chief Dennis Glenn of the Fairfield Fire Department.
But he said he has narrowed the origin of the fire to one of 10 units that burned at 100 Westwood Drive.
He said two other units, in a building next door, also were damaged.
Fairfield firefighters first received a call at 6:54 p.m. Saturday. Units from Fairfield, Springdale and Forest Park responded quickly; trucks arrived by 6:59 p.m., he said.
Fortunately, no one was injured, said Scott Landreth, property manager for the complex.
We've relocated nine families. The 10th unit was unoccupied.
We were worried that several cats were missing in action, but they showed up later.
I understand that one of them hid under a toilet.
Mr. Landreth said an individual count of residents displaced by the fire was not available Tuesday.
The apartments are two stories in front, three in back. Fire heavily damaged the rear of the building, especially the roof and back interior.
The wood-frame building is covered by vinyl siding and brick. Cobblestone is in an area of Fairfield with numer ous apartment complexes.
Neither Mr. Landreth nor Deputy Chief Glenn had a damage estimate, but Deputy Chief Glenn said a fire report taken immediately after the fire listed the building's worth at $500,000.
We're just happy that nobody was hurt, Mr. Landreth said. Not even any smoke inhalation.
But Deputy Chief Glenn said three firefighters were injured.
One suffered burns to his forehead, another stepped on a nail and another complained of chest pains while fighting the blaze.
