Court may OK study of proposed sewer plant

BURLINGTON The Boone County Fiscal Court has agreed that a study is in order to determine the impact of a proposed sewage treatment plant on the environment.
Residents living near the western Boone County site, which is along the Ohio River north of Belleview Bottoms, are concerned that the plant could contaminate the area's drinking water and damage the environment.
An opposition group that has formed to fight construction of the plant, proposed by Sanitation District 1 of Northern Kentucky, has been pushing the court to become involved and hire an outside party to assess the environmental impact of the plant.
During a Tuesday morning caucus meeting, court members said they likely will approve paying for the study Sept. 14 during their regular fiscal court meeting, said Boone County Deputy Judge-executive John Stanton.
There was not an official vote because (Tuesday) was just a caucus meeting, Mr. Stanton said.
Sanitation District officials have said they welcome the study, saying it will support their research that a plant won't damage the environment or infiltrate an underground aquifer that supplies the area with much of its drinking water.
But John Arrasmith, one of the leaders of the opposition group, has said the study should have been done before the district proceeded with plans for the plant.
The Sanitation District continues to move forward with this plant despite notknowing all the facts, Mr. Arrasmith said.
All work on this project should stop until we have all the facts.
