Staying in
        • TV picks: Keep your money, it's your time that WCET-TV wants tonight. During breaks in the Ipi Ntombi African dance show (8-10 p.m., Channel 48), viewers will be asked to volunteer as mentors for the Cincinnati Public Schools through the Cincinnati Youth Collaborative. P&G Chairman John Pepper and CYC Director Miriam West explain the Mentor 2000 program during a special Focus with Kathy Lehr (7:30 p.m.).

What's in stores today
        • Disc picks: The post-Labor Day weekend CD releases are traditionally slim, but Enquirer music critic Larry Nager found some unusual selections.

        • Blues Traveler front man/harmonica whiz John Popper blows solo on Zygote (A&M; $17.98 CD; $11.98 cassette).

        • Excuse him while he kisses the sky. With The Kennedy Experience (Sony Classical; $17.98 CD), the Violinist Formerly Known as Nigel debuts his new eight-piece group to deliver his avant-classical tribute to Jimi Hendrix.

        • Don't let the title fool you, Coal Chamber's Chamber Music (Roadrunner; $16.98 CD; $10.99 cassette) isn't aimed at the classical crossover crowd. It's more heavy sounds from the metal band.

Brand spanking new
        • Tape-saver: New from 3M is Scotch pop-up tape, a hand-held dispenser that automatically pops up precut pieces of tape right to a child's fingers, minimizing waste. Kids will dig the dispenser's cool colors. They can hook it on a key chain and attach it to their backpacks. Ages 6-12. Cost: $1.29.

Planning ahead
        • A day away: In concert Thursdayis Bob Dylan and Paul Simon, 7 p.m., Deer Creek Music Center, Indianapolis. $43.50, $26.50. 562-4949. • 48 hours out: The String Quintet of the Holy Trinity Philharmonic Orchestra of Port-au-Prince, Haiti, performs 7 p.m. Friday at Church of the Advent, 2366 Kemper Lane, Walnut Hills.         • 72 hours 'til Saturday: Enjoy dinner and music by Jay & Co., 6:30 p.m. at the Golden Lamb in Lebanon. $35. Reservations: 932-5065.
