Norwood searching for schools chief again

Errington to 're-retire' mid-contract

BY CHRISTINE WOLFF
The Cincinnati Enquirer

NORWOOD — The Norwood City School District again is looking for a superintendent.

Superintendent Garth Errington, 65, is leaving to pursue volunteer work. He took over the district in 1998 after the top two administrators resigned, citing friction with the school board.

The board will meet today to accept the resignation and to discuss how to fill the position. An interim superintendent likely will be selected today, board members said.

The resignation is a huge loss for the district, said Eric Goering, a board member.

“He's been an excellent administrator, a really good "people person,'” Mr. Goering said. “It's unfortunate that he's moving on.”

“We'll miss him,” said Susan Geselbracht, board president. “In a short time, he's been such a tremendous asset to the district.”

Dr. Errington of Sharonville — who retired in 1994 after 10 years as superintendent of the Sycamore Community School District — ends his tenure with Norwood schools Sept. 30.

“I'm re-retiring,” he said Tuesday. “The opportunity is knocking, and this sounds equally challenging.”

His new position will be volunteering with a nonprofit organization called Matthew 25: Ministries, based in Loveland. He'll be contacting companies around the country to ask for donations of products, which the organization sends to people in need. Matthew 25 has been involved recently with sending supplies to storm-damaged Honduras.

Dr. Errington was named interim superintendent in February 1998. Then, after a search among 38 candidates, the board asked Dr. Errington to stay, signing him to a two-year contract on July 1, 1998.

In October 1997, former Norwood Superintendent Jim Ballinger and his assistant, David Beamer — who took over the top positions as a team in 1992 — announced their retirements. They cited weariness with infighting on the board as the reason. Both started in Norwood schools as kindergartners and spent all or most of their 30-year education careers in the district.

The dual retirements topped months of turmoil, which included the resignation of a 16-year veteran board member who said she left because of difficulties with some members. Residents pleaded for an end to arguing over minutiae.
