“The world knows Ripley, Ohio, and what happened here,” says Carl Westmoreland, external affairs adviser of the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center.

Cincinnati artist David Day's portrait of the Brown County river town will be used as the John Parker Award, to be presented during the Ohio Forum Weekend, Sept. 24-26.

Mr. Day created a composite view of Ripley that includes buildings significant to the Underground Railroad in the years before the Civil War.

Only 20 prints will be made from the drawing, one for each recipient of the award for the next 20 years.

The award, given to “heroes working diligently in the Underground Railroad movement,” is named in honor of John Parker, a former slave who lived in Ripley and helped more than 800 slaves to freedom. His house is the first house on the left in the drawing.

The Ohio Forum Weekend is sponsored by the center and the Ohio Humanities Council. It includes a lecture by John Hope Franklin, author of Runaway Slaves, performances and a tour of Ripley.

        For information phone 412-6900.
