Scaffolding surrounds fountain

The normally clear view of the Tyler Davidson Fountain from the skywalk across Fifth Street was obscured Tuesday by scaffolding and the framework for a $100,000 glass structure around the fountain that will be a window to let the public watch its restoration.

The heated structure will ensure the $2.2 million overhaul can go on through the winter.

The fountain, dedicated in 1871 and last restored in 1971, is seriously corroded inside and weather-beaten.

The work should be done in time for the Reds Opening Day ceremony in April.
