OHIO HIGH SCHOOL HIGHLIGHTS

Glen Este girls unbeaten

The Cincinnati Enquirer

When first-year Glen Este coach Julie McCaffrey voted in The Enquirer's preseason girls soccer poll, she ranked the Trojans a lowly No. 10. After Tuesday's 2-0 victory over Amelia, McCaffrey has a more positive outlook for a 3-0 Trojan team.

“Don't ever underestimate us,” McCaffrey said. “We lost five key players but our senior captains (Rachel Barron, Kristina Wilson, Denise Kunz) have stepped up. I told them to be successful, they had to step up.”

McCaffrey is also pleased with freshman goalie Kristen Thomas, who recorded a second shutout Tuesday. “Kristen has shown a lot of poise and come up big,” McCaffrey said.

Another surprise team this season is Northwest. The Knights are 3-1 after a 2-1 victory over Harrison.

Senior midfielder Shay Hundley lofted a perfectly placed shot from 30 yards out that the Harrison goalie was unable to reach for the winner with five minutes remaining.

St. Ursula is another team that was hit hard by graduation but the Bulldogs have also been impressive, winning their second game by downing McNicholas 1-0.

Danielle Patton crossed the ball to Jenna Owens who scored seven minutes into the game.

BOYS SOCCER: When Oak Hills was overlooked in the preseason ranking, coach Chuck Ausman had the ammunition needed to arouse the players.

The Highlanders improved to 3-1 Tuesday with a 3-1 victory over St. Xavier, the No. 5-ranked Division I team.

Bobby Schuckman, a defensive player the past two years, scored two goals to pace Oak Hills with Kevin Weyler adding a third.

“We moved Bobby to forward because we needed guys with a high work ethic,” Ausman said. “We needed to send a message to the other players that they need to work harder.”
