Greenspan taking vitals on region's economy
Visit to Fed here today routine check
BY JEFF McKINNEY
The Cincinnati Enquirer
Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan will quietly pop into Cincinnati today and promptly disappear.
Mr. Greenspan, arguably the nation's second-most-powerful man, will attend a meet ing of the Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland at its Cincinnati branch.
The visit by the chief of the nation's central bank is part of periodic visits that he makes to the 12 Federal Reserve Banks across the country. The Cleveland Federal Reserve Bank includes branches in Cincinnati and Pittsburgh.
Mr. Greenspan's goal at the meetings is to try to take the pulse of the nation's economy from a grass-roots level.
He asks questions about the local economy on such issues as unemployment, housing starts and lending activity at banks.
Stephen P. Wilson, presi dent and chief executive at Lebanon Citizens National Bank and director of the Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland's Cincinnati branch, described Mr. Greenspan as the most knowledgeable person he knows on domestic and global economic issues.
Today will mark the second time that Mr. Wilson breaks bread with Mr. Greenspan in Cincinnati. He also has mingled with him in Cleveland and Washington, D.C.
He said Mr. Greenspan, a jogger in his spare time, has an incredible mind and is a great communicator.
He can take a question from a novice like me and put it in perspective in a way you could never imagine, Mr. Wilson said.
