Board opposes splitting Middletown-Monroe

The Cincinnati Enquirer

MONROE — For the second time in two years, the Ohio Department of Education is recommending against splitting the Middletown-Monroe Schools.

A resolution denying a petition by Monroe's Committee on Reviewing Education (CORE) to form its own district has been forwarded to members of the Ohio Board of Education for action at Tuesday's meeting in Columbus, said LeeAnne Rogers, department spokeswoman.

In a report to Susan T. Zelman, Ohio's superintendent of public instruction, staff members said “there has been no substantial change in circum stances” since the board denied the request in 1997.

“CORE has been able to demonstrate that members of the Monroe community support the creation of a new district ... but there has been little evidence of need” to do it.

Countered Suzi Rubin, CORE spokeswoman: “I don't know how they can say there's no substantive changes.”

In the original plan, the proposed district would include land in the Middletown-Monroe and Lebanon districts that lie within Monroe's boundaries. Ms. Rubin said CORE has been talking about reducing the amount of land removed from Lebanon.
