Christians want to stress religious meaning of 2000

BY JULIE IRWIN
The Cincinnati Enquirer

Quick quiz. The year 2000 is significant because:

        a) The world as we know it may end.

        b) Computer disasters could wreak havoc.

        c) Christianity will celebrate the 2000th anniversary of Jesus' birth.

Many Christian groups, tired of answers a) and b), are determined to refocus attention on Jesus' birth as 1999 draws to a close. They are planning events to celebrate throughout the coming year.

“When we first started talking about the millennium and doom and gloom, and all the problems people were anticipating and still are anticipating, we thought we needed as Christians to present in a positive way that this is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate our unity,” says the Rev. William Neuroth, executive director of the Northern Kentucky Interfaith Commission.

The commission and the Council of Christian Communions have formed Celebrate Christ 2000, a series of observances that kicks off Sept. 14 with a peace walk across the Taylor Southgate Bridge. The walk, which coincides with the United Nations International Day of World Peace, will begin at 6 p.m. at Yeatman's Cove. Walkers will have a chance to view and touch the World Peace Bell.

Celebrate Christ 2000 also is planning an ecumenical Thanksgiving service Nov. 23, a Christian Unity Service Feb. 6, and other events for Advent and Pentecost. For information, call 559-3151.

Churches along the Interstate 75 corridor are planning a Jesus 2000 ecumenical Christian celebration Dec. 19 at the Sharonville Convention Center. The celebration will include worship, carols, Scripture readings and fellowship. For information, call 554-3544.

And individual denominations are planning their own celebrations. The Catholic Archdiocese of Cincinnati will hold a local seven-church pilgrimage, reminiscent of the Roman tradition of seven-church pilgrimages, May 21. The Most Rev. Daniel E. Pilarczyk, archbishop of Cincinnati, is also leading a pilgrimage to Rome in May. The archdiocese's phone number is 421-3131.
