Muhlhauser almost finished
Two-lane road expands to five
BY MICHAEL D. CLARK

UNION TOWNSHIP The growing pains that came with the expansion of Muhlhauser Road will soon end, Butler County transportation officials say.
Relief is on the way, said Greg Wilkens, executive director of the Butler County Transportation Improvement District (TID), which is overseeing a number of road projects in the county's fastest-growing community.
But Mr. Wilkens said the widening of Muhlhauser Road from two lanes to five is a major component to relieving chronic traffic congestion in southeast Butler County.
We're real close to being right on schedule, Mr. Wilkens said of the projected completion date late October.
The Muhlhauser widening, which began in spring, is part of a $12 million package of road building and widening in and around Union Township's new business district, which is quickly being erected near the new Interstate 75 and Union Centre Boulevard interchange. The projects are being supervised by TID, a multijurisdictional, quasi-governmental body responsible for building the Butler Regional Highway and making other road improvements.
Widening Muhlhauser to five lanes between International Boulevard and just beyond Ohio 747 will cost an estimated $2.3 million.
We know we are causing some traffic problems and we knew it would add additional traffic, but we thought it was important to do this quickly, Mr. Wilkens said.
This project is part of a whole system of road networks that ties (Ohio) 747 and the western part of Union Township, and the city of Fairfield, to the I-75 interchange, he said.
The Muhlhauser-747 intersection is marked by construction equipment, orange barrels and traffic jams during rush hours.
The backed-up traffic often adds to the congestion that plagues Ohio 747 north and south of Muhlhauser. But once Muhlhauser is expanded to five lanes, TID officials expect the traffic flow along 747 to improve greatly.
The expected traffic flow improvements from the Muhlhauser expansion also will help reduce traffic along Interstate 275 between Ohio 4 and I-75, he said.
