Oxford visitors in for a sweet time at Honey Festival

BY JENNY CALLISON

OXFORD — It's a weekend to make Lorenzo Lorrain Langstroth proud. The late inventor of the movable comb beehive would no doubt welcome the Ohio Honey Festival to his hometown.

For the second year, Ox ford will host the festival, which begins today and continues through Sunday in the uptown area.

There will be carnival rides, a classic car show, musical entertainment, crafts and a parade. Also on tap: performances by a magician, Dr. Eldoonie, who made it to the Guinness Book of World Re cords by performing 256 magic tricks in two minutes.

But most of all, there will be honey, harvested easily these days thanks to Mr. Langstroth's invention.

Many of the foods served by festival vendors are made or enhanced with honey.

“We have specially made honey ice cream,” said Mary rose Beerman, the event coordinator. “A local beekeeper provides the honey and it's freshly made up in Columbus.”

Ms. Beerman said the festival's bee lab tent will be larger than it was last year, with more displays.

Staffed by employees of the Ohio State University Extension Service at Wooster Col lege, the lab will contain a real hive with a queen bee. Visitors can see how honey is extracted and can taste honey made from different pollens.

Swing music will be performed Friday evening by the Swagger Boys. Robin Lacey and deZydeco take the stage Saturday. Both bands will play from 7 to 11 p.m.
