Neighborhood health fairs free

BY SUE MacDONALD
The Cincinnati Enquirer

Organizations interested in the health of all citizens are taking their messages to the streets — literally.

Two September health fairs provide free services, education and health screenings to residents in Walnut Hills and women in Price Hill.

In both instances, the sponsors are offering health services at neighborhood sites to reach diverse populations or medically underserved — those that have high incidences of certain diseases, for example, but who may not have the money or necessary access to traditional health care services.

Lower Price Hill and East Price Hill are federally designated as areas with medical service shortages. In East Price Hill, 27 percent of families have incomes below the poverty level and 67 percent of those families are headed by women.

        Among the programs:

        • Health Awareness Fair, sponsored by the non-profit Inner City Health Care and Bayer Diagnostics, will be 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturdayat Charles E. Dillard Memorial Medical Building, 791 E. McMillan St., Walnut Hills. Participants can take advantage of free blood sugar testing/screening, blood pressure tests and free immunizations for school-age children. Displays will provide information on vision, home care, diabetes, insurance and other issues.

Dr. Charles O. Dillard, internal medicine specialist; Dr. Joe Hackworth, heart specialist; and Jennifer Hesse, dietitian and diabetes educator, will be on hand to answer health questions. For information, call 961-5913.

        • The first Price Hill Women's Health Fair will be 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Sept. 25 in the Seton High School cafeteria, 3901 Glenway Ave., Price Hill. It will feature mammograms and Pap tests for women who preregister, as well as free screenings for arthritis, colon cancer, depression, diabetes, heart disease, bone problems, sexually transmitted disease, vision, hearing and more. Workshops on women's health fill out the program.

“There is a great need in this area for quality medical care, referrals and services,” says Sister Mary Jo Gasdorf of Sisters of Charity and executive director of the Women's Connection in Price Hill, one of the event's sponsors. Othersponsors include Healthy Moms and Babes, the Jordan Center, Seton High School, YWCA Breast and Cervical Health Project, Cincinnati Health Department, American Cancer Society, Alliance Women's Health, TriHealth Spirit of Women and Mercy Franciscan Health Ministries. Free. For mammogram and Pap test appointments, call 241-9990.
