How Cincinnati stacks up on the biotech front

The Life Science Task Force compared Cincinnati with 21 regional markets on eight factors for a successful biotech industry. San Francisco and Boston were not included because their biotech industries were considered too big for fair comparison.

Cincinnati ranked ninth in an overall measure of the success factors. The top performers, in order, were:

San Diego; Minneapolis; Atlanta; Seattle; Houston; Raleigh-Durham, N.C.; Salt Lake City; Pittsburgh; Cincinnati; Baltimore; St. Louis; Cleveland; Indianapolis; Columbus; Milwaukee; Nashville, Tenn.; Birmingham, Ala.; Lexington, Ky.; Charlotte, N.C.; Louisville; Dayton, Ohio; and Toledo.

In the individual categories, Cincinnati ranked:

        • Third in effectiveness of technology transfer, a measure of how many patents and new businesses are generated per dollar spent on research.

        • Third in access to service firms, such as patent companies and clinical trial organizations.

        • Fourth in access to transportation.

        • Seventh in quality of life, based on how the 22 cities fared in the most recent Places Rated Almanac.

        • 11th in the size of its skilled work force.

        • 16th in academic research.

        • 17th in access to capital.

        • 18th in entrepreneurial culture.
