The end of Schott is near, and it's good
Marge Schott has never been much for telephone manners. She keeps hanging up on baseball's lawyers as if they were calling her to pitch replacement windows.

REDS 5, CUBS 4
The Reds picked up a game on the Astros. Greg Vaughn drove in a pair of runs with a single and his 39th home run, boosting his season RBI total to 103 — the most by a Red since Dave Parker had 116 in 1986.

Thrill of race keeps Vaughn going
The numbers, impressive as they are, aren't what make Greg Vaughn happy. It's the games and how much they mean that has Vaughn smiling these days.

Phillies 8, Astros 6
HOUSTON — The Philadelphia Phillies stopped their 11-game losing streak and ended Houston's team-record 12-game winning string, beating the Astros 8-6 Wednesday night on Doug Glanville's career-high five hits.

Mets 10, Rockies 5
DENVER — Darryl Hamilton's run-scoring triple broke a tie in the eighth inning, as the New York Mets continued their playoff push with a 10-5 victory over the Colorado Rockies on Wednesday.

How Reds, Astros, Mets finish

Pinch of Sweeney goes long way
Hitters will tell you that the most difficult thing in baseball is to pinch hit. So how does Mark Sweeney make it look so easy?

REDS NOTEBOOK
Reliever Scott Williamson insisted he'd be ready to pitch today after leaving Wednesday night's game with a small cut on the middle finger of his right (throwing) hand, though manager ack McKeon indicated that he might let the rookie heal for at least a day.

IRL will race in Kentucky
The new Kentucky Speedway is about to announce its most prestigious event to date, with the Indy Racing League (IRL) having agreed to race during the track's opening season in 2000.

Blake's feet a headache for foes
Jeff Blake may not threaten Bobby Douglass' 27-year-old NFL record of 968 rushing yards in a season by a quarterback. But the Bengals think the threat might be just as good.

Pickens set to start Sunday
A week ago, wide receiver Carl Pickens arrived in Cincinnati believing he would never play for the Bengals again. On Wednesday he was back in the starting lineup as the Bengals prepared for Sunday's home opener against the Chargers.

BENGALS NOTEBOOK
The Carl Pickens deal has taken a $5.2 million chunk out of the Bengals' salary cap for 1999, greatly reducing the chances of the team extending the contracts of other potential free agents.

UC braces for Great Dayne
At his current rate, Wisconsin tailback Ron Dayne will break the NCAA's career rushing record when he appears in a bowl game or, should the Badgers fall short, the first week of his NFL career. Only thing is, it doesn't work like that.

UC Hall of Fame to add six
The University of Cincinnati has announced six new inductees into its Jim Kelly Athletic Hall of Fame, including several who earned All-America honors.

XU recruit declared partial qualifier
Xavier got a minor concession from the NCAA on behalf of freshman Lionel Chalmers but not enough for the point guard to be able to play for the Musketeers when the season begins.

Rambo, Germany catching on
COLUMBUS — Ken-Yon Rambo may not be a Madonna fan. But his favorite way to explain the breakout performance of Ohio State's wide receivers against UCLA is straight out of the material girl's songbook: “Express Yourself.”

Flying Pig Marathon
Kenyans dominate marathon running, so it figured that a Kenyan would win Cincinnati's first Flying Pig Marathon. But it was a hometown runner who brought home the bacon in the women's division. Check out our special coverage, including complete results and a photo gallery.
