One of 2 suspects in shooting arrested

One of the two men wanted in the Wednesday shooting of a man on an Over-the-Rhine street was arrested Thursday.

Cincinnati police charged Keyo Smith, 20, of the 5400 block of Hillside Avenue, Riverside, with felonious assault.

Police had arrest warrants for Mr. Smith and Anthony Criswell, 19, whose last known address is Henry Street, Over-the-Rhine, in the shooting of Telly Murray, 23.

The shooting occurred at 3:28 p.m. Wednesday at 14 W. 13th St. Mr. Murray, who suffered a gunshot wound to the abdomen, was released Thursday evening from University Hospital.

Mr. Criswell was at large Thursday night.

Chief backs officer in shooting of suspect
DAYTON, Ohio — Evidence supports a policeman's claim that he shot a man during a struggle for the officer's gun, the city's police chief said.

“I stand fast in support of this officer and the job he did in this situation,” Chief Ronald Lowe said Wednesday. He declined to release details of the investigation into the shooting until the case is sent to a grand jury.

Officer Roger Kielbaso, 38, shot Todd Brunson, 26, after a brief chase Sunday. Officer Kielbaso, a six-year veteran of the police force, is on paid leave during the inquiry.

Mr. Brunson was wanted in connection with the theft in August of $2,000 from a van.

Sheppard exhumation expected next month
CLEVELAND — The Cuyahoga County prosecutor said Thursday he expects the body of Marilyn Sheppard to be exhumed in early October, more than 45 years after she was slain in her home in suburban Bay Village.

“There is a date set. We haven't disclosed it,” Prosecutor William Mason said, although he added that early October would be accurate.

Mr. Mason is defending the state against a lawsuit filed by Sam Reese Sheppard, the son of Marilyn and Dr. Sam Sheppard.

Mr. Sheppard says his late father was innocent and was wrongly imprisoned for killing his mother. A civil trial before Common Pleas Judge Ronald Suster is set for Jan. 31.

Pilot dies as plane crashes on takeoff
BROOKVILLE, Ohio — A single-engine plane crashed Thursday in a soybean field near this western Ohio community, killing the pilot.

The State Highway Patrol identified the victim as John Maestre, 38, of Brookville. Mr. Maestre was the only person aboard.

According to the patrol, Mr. Maestre had just taken off from Brookville Air Park and began to turn when the plane crashed in the field and caught fire at 8:46 a.m.

The cause of the crash was under investigation.

Asians, Hispanics add numbers in Indiana
INDIANAPOLIS — Asians and Hispanics are the fastest-growing segments of Indiana's population, fitting a pattern seen across the country in 1998 population estimates released this week.

While the state's population increased 6.2 percent from 1990 to 1998, the number of people of Asian and Hispanic heritage increased by more than 40 percent during the same time period, the U.S. Census Bureau reports.

Every category of minorities and immigrants grew at a faster pace than Indiana's white population from 1990 to 1998, but not nearly as quickly as Asians and Hispanics, according to the census estimates.

The number of Hispanics in Indiana has increased to 145,000 from just under 100,000 between 1990 and 1998. The state's number of people from Asia and the Pacific Islands increased to 53,000 from 37,000 in the same period.
