Woodlawn signs off on deal for new pool

BY SARA J. BENNETT
The Cincinnati Enquirer

WOODLAWN — If plans to replace the village's pool proceed on schedule, swimming enthusiasts will have an Olympic-size pool, Soaker chutes for kids to crawl through, a slide and water cannons, a wet deck and a new bathhouse to look forward to next summer.

The village moved a step closer to completing the project this week when council approved a $392,000 contract for a new aluminum pool.

During construction of the village's new bathhouse, the old pool was found to have potential electrical hazards.

Work on the new pool, which will be built by Shamrock Enterprises, a division of Bevis' Robert P. O'Brien Enterprises Inc., should begin soon, said Project Manager Darren Mills. The pool could open by Memorial Day.

“Hopefully we can get started before bad weather hits to try to get finished before January,” Mr. Mills said.

At Tuesday's Village Coun cil meeting, he said an aluminum pool would be more durable and require less maintenance than a stainless steel pool, which would have a concrete bottom.

The new pool is part of a project to update Woodlawn's swimming facilities. In addition to the $392,000 pool, plans call for $150,000 worth of water features.

They include a water slide, fountains that spray water onto the pool's wet deck, water cannons, a mushroom that spurts a curtain of water, and water-spraying coils kids can crawl through.

The new 4,000-square-foot bathhouse is near completion but can't be finished until the new pool is in place, Mr. Mills said. The $740,000 facility will be open year-round and includes two large meeting rooms; a first-aid area; and staff training room, locker rooms and restrooms.

While the old pool was closed this summer, an agreement allowed village residents to use Forest Park's pool.
