CINCINNATI FOOTBALL PICKS
By Dave Schutte
HIGHLANDS (3-0) vs. ELDER (3-0)
WHEN: 7:30 p.m. today.
WHERE: Elder High School, 3400 Vincent Ave., Price Hill.
WHAT TO WATCH: This will be the first meeting between these football powers and playing in The Pit before 11,000 fans may be an experience the Bluebirds will remember for a long time.
Elder not only has a stingy defense but also a potent offense that features quarterback Collin Carey (21-for-35, 442 yards), fullback Kyle Koester (330 rushing) and tailback Bill Tiemeier (202 rushing).
Highlands relies heavily on the passing of quarterback Gino Guidugli (39-of-63 for 636 yards) and running back Brenden Zenni (55 carries for 387 yards).
In the trenches, Elder will have too much size and quickness for the Bluebird.
PICK: Elder
GLEN ESTE (2-1) vs. HARRISON (2-1)
WHEN: 7:30 p.m. today.
WHERE: Harrison High School, 9860 West Road, Harrison.
WHAT TO WATCH: Coming off a 42-15 triumph over Amelia, Glen Este's explosive offense is triggered by quarterbacks Mike Rieck (225 passing) and Mike Clyburn (428 rushing).
Harrison's offense also has been impressive led by sophomore tailback Charlie Key (490 yards), quarterback Pat Hannon (15-for-26, 250 yards)and receiver Brian Smith (13 catches, 74 yards) the major weapons.
Harrison has too much tradition and experience for Glen Este tonight.
PICK: Harrison
FINNEYTOWN (2-1) vs. DEER PARK (3-0)
WHEN: 7:30 p.m. today
WHERE: Deer Park Stadium, 8351 Plainfield Road, Deer Park.
WHAT TO WATCH: Although Deer Park started the season with three consecutive victories, Finneytown will be its toughest test.
Deer Park's offensive line has made it easy for tailback Ryan Brown (623 rushing)
and fullback Mark Streaker 269 rushing) to find holes.
Finneytown's impressive performance in a 21-13 loss to undefeated Wyoming proved the Wildcats can compete against better teams.
Defensively, Deer Park has the size advantage and that will be the difference.
Pick: Deer Park
McNICHOLAS (3-0) vs. KETTERING ALTER (2-1)
WHEN: 7:30 p.m. today.
WHERE: Centerville Stadium, Route 725, Centerville.
WHAT TO WATCH: This is the Greater Catholic League North Division opener for both teams.
McNicholas has been the surprise team in the GCL, winning three non-conference games while averaging more than 300 yards a game.
McNicholas sophomore quarterback Bryan Cupito has completed 28-of-46 passes for 513 yards and eight TDs.
Alter is primarily a running team, relying heavily on running backs Kevin Fuederer and Andy Swafford, along with quarterback Justine Cetone and wide receiver Andy Carter.
PICK: Alter.
LASALLE (2-1) vs. OAK HILLS (2-1)
WHEN: 7:30 p.m. today
WHERE: Oak Hills High School, 3200 Ebenezer Road,, Bridgetown.
WHAT TO WATCH: After opening the season with a loss to Colerain, the Highlander offense has come alive behind junior running back Nick Paff (393 yards rushing).
LaSalle's offense racked up 300 yards and 36 points in a win over Boone County last week.
If the Lancers can penetrate the Highlander defense, this could one of the better games.
