Experts: Stockpiles for Y2K may harm
        WASHINGTON — Stockpiling and inventory hedging against Year 2000 computer failures could cause worse trouble than the Y2K glitch itself, the nation's top financial leaders warned Friday.

Internet auction newcomer a giant
        SAN JOSE, Calif. — Microsoft, Dell Computer and almost 100 other companies are banding together to challenge eBay Inc.'s dominance of the Internet auction industry by pooling their listings and bids.

GE to simplify online sales
        FAIRFIELD, Conn. — General Electric Co., the second-largest U.S. company by market value, plans to create a Web site to sell consumer services and products such as mortgages.

New ownership to expand Widmer's chain
        Widmer's Inc., the 89-year-old dry cleaner owned by the Olmstead family since 1950, is about to make a dramatic alteration: new ownership.

Ohio Casualty moving more offices out of Hamilton

        Ashland Inc. slightly sweetened its bid for Danish industrial company Superfos Inc. Friday, amid reports a new bid for its coveted U.S. highway construction business may be in the offing.

        Dr. Charles Gendel has been named chief medical officer at ChoiceCare/Humana, the Cincinnati-based subsidiary of Humana Inc.

Strong home-building trend surprises analysts
        WASHINGTON — Construction of new homes and apartments posted a 0.4 percent increase in August, leaving analysts marveling at the continued strength in housing despite rising mortgage rates.

TRISTATE MARKET SPOTLIGHT
        Stock in Cincinnati's Federated Department Stores Inc. gained $2, or about 4.4 percent, to close Friday at $47.561/4. It had traded as high as $47.871/2.
