The main draw of this weekend's inaugural River Front Classic & Jamboree is today's football game between historical black colleges Bethune-Cookman and Howard University.
Game time is 2:30 p.m. at Cinergy Field.
The goal here is to provide a great opportunity for the community to enjoy black college football and enjoy really a whole event-entertainment package, said Mike Milidonis, executive director of the Greater Cincinnati Sports Corporation.
The Classic is one of about 40 historical black college football matchups planned throughout the country this year. Four other Classics are being played today in other cities. This is the only event scheduled for Ohio.
Both Howard and Bethune-Cookman finished in the Top 10 of black colleges last season. Bethune-Cookman was ranked 22nd in the final 1998 USA Today/ESPN Division I-AA poll.
Bethune-Cookman (2-0, 1-0) is led by sophomore quarterback Pa'tel Troutman. An injury slowed him in last week's 28-25 win over Morgan State. But In the season opener, his 162 yards rushing and two touchdowns earned him Mid-Eastern Atlantic Conference Player of the Week honors.
Howard (0-2, 0-1) has started slowly but has gotten several strong individual performances in its first two games: a 309-yard passing effort from quarterback Bobby Townsend, a four-touchdown game from running back Jermaine Hutchinson, 151 yards receiving by wide receiver Elijah Thurmon, and a two-interception performance by safety Brian McDonald.
Bethune-Cookman is located in Daytona Beach, Fla. Howard is in Washington D.C.
