Bond raised for driver in crash that killed two

UNION TOWNSHIP — The bond of a Hamilton man charged with the traffic deaths of two people skyrocketed during a quick court appearance Monday.

Jesus Padilla, 42, faces two counts of aggravated vehicular homicide after a double-fatal car crash on Tylersville Road Sept. 13. He had been free on a $20,000 bond, but Butler County Area 3 Court Judge Robert Hendrickson raised the bond to $100,000 on each count after prosecutors urged a higher bond. Mr. Padilla is being held in the Butler County Jail.

Mr. Padilla was charged after the van he was driving crossed the center line in the 4600 block of Tylersville Road and struck a Ford Explorer head-on, flipping it onto its top.

The two occupants, Cecil R. Shope, 55, of Cincinnati, and Sandra G. Shircliff, 47, of Maineville died at the scene.

John Smith, Mr. Padilla's attorney, argued that the $20,000 bond be continued because Mr. Padilla is an eight-year resident of Hamilton, has several family members in the area and is not a flight risk. Mr. Padilla speaks little English and doesn't write it at all.

“Obviously the purpose of bond is to secure somebody's appearance,” Mr. Smith said. “He's here.”

Union Township Police Officer Barry Walker indicated alcohol may have played a role in the accident. Judge Hendrickson said Mr. Padilla has been convicted twice of DUI.

Mr. Padilla is to be back in court Monday for a preliminary hearing.
