Work on Hummer park to start soon

Memorial for slain for murdered OSU student

SPRINGFIELD TWP. — Work should begin before the end of the month on Stephanie Hummer Memorial Park off North Bend Road, which will feature three soccer fields when completed.

The township's newest park honors Miss Hummer, the 18-year-old Finneytown resident and Finneytown High School graduate who was killed in 1994 during her freshman year at Ohio State University.

At Finneytown High, Miss Hummer was involved in school activities and sports, especially soccer.

The 15 acres of vacant property on North Bend Road, near St. Xavier High School, had been given to the Hummer family and a trust by the Procter & Gamble Co., with the understanding that it be developed into a recreational park to honor Miss Hummer.

The property was then transferred over to the township.

The park will be developed in three phases. Last week, the township's trustees awarded a $350,000 contract to the Schweitzer Construction Co. to begin work on the park.

Roy Schweitzer Jr., vice president and general manager of the company, based in Arlington Heights, said they will begin grading work on the site once a preconstruction meeting with township officials takes place.

“We anticipate being able to do all the grading work this fall season,” Mr. Schweitzer said.

The work involves putting in three soccer fields, which includes two practice fields. Mr. Schweitzer said that if all work proceeds as planned, teams could be playing on the fields by next fall.

The first phase will entail putting in storm drains, a sewer system, a driveway and parking lot and an irrigation system for the fields.

“Finishing the final seeding will happen in the spring,” said Mr. Schweitzer.

Other phases of construction will include building a concession stand and restroom facilities, and electrical work.

Peg Doller, administrative assistant to Mike Hinnenkamp, township administrator, said bids are being accepted on the concession stand and restroom facility construction, with bid opening scheduled for Oct. 6.

She said the contract won't be awarded until at least the Oct. 12 board of trustees meeting.

Estimated cost of the entire project is about $900,000.

Miss Hummer was attending OSU on a full scholarship when she was killed in March 1994 near the OSU campus. No one has been charged with her death.
