Teen could face adult trial in car wreck

BY JANE PRENDERGAST
The Cincinnati Enquirer

COVINGTON — Officials want more time to decide whether a Beechwood High School football player accused of injuring a friend in a weekend car wreck should stand trial as an adult.

Because the 15-year-old is charged with assault, a Class B felony, he can be transferred to the adult court system. Kenton County Attorney Garry Edmondson has not made that decision yet, he said Wednesday.

He said he wants to see how the wreck victim, Brad Fitz, 15, of Edgewood, recuperates. The condition of the teen is among the factors he will consider in making the determination, he said.

Brad, who plays football for Beechwood rival Covington Catholic High School, remained in serious condition Wednesday at University Hospital.

The boys and their families have been longtime friends, officials said. Their teams played each other Friday, the night before the accident.

The driver also faces a charge of unauthorized use of a motor vehicle. Police say he took the car without permission from someone he knew Saturday. They attribute the wreck at least in part to alcohol consumption and speed. The car sped through Highland Cemetery and hit a tree about 10:30 p.m., Fort Mitchell Police Chief Steve Hensley said.

The driver was not held in juvenile detention, a decision made by Kenton District Judge Frank Trusty. He went home with his parents instead.

Another hearing was set for Oct. 13.
