Bauer denies infidelity rumor

USA Today

WASHINGTON — Republican presidential candidate Gary Bauer, a champion of conservative family values, has scheduled a news conference today to deny rumors of an extramarital affair with a young woman.

Mr. Bauer, on leave from his job as president of the Family Research Council, decided to move swiftly to rebut the rumor after it appeared in print this week.

In an interview with the San Francisco Chronicle published Tuesday, Mr. Bauer called the rumor false and “disgusting,” and speculated that it might have been spread by the campaign of a rival candidate for the Republican nomination.

Monday, the New York Daily News printed a gossip item that asked: “What presidential candidate is praying that a former secretary doesn't go public with her claim that he's been having an affair with a twenty-something woman? Many on the married Republican's campaign staff are already jumping ship.”

“I think it's supposed to be me and it's disgusting,” Mr. Bauer, 53, told the Chronicle.
