Dayton picks police chief
BY TERRY FLYNN

DAYTON City officials once again went to neighboring Kenton County for a police chief, naming Elsmere Sgt. Greg Aylor on Tuesday to replace the retired Fred Hildebrandt.
We're looking forward to him coming here, Dayton City Administrator Dan Groth said Tuesday. Greg Aylor is a no-nonsense officer, and he's very informed on community-oriented policing, which we are emphasizing in Dayton.
Sgt. Aylor, 31, was chosen from more than two dozen ap plicants for the position. The job opened when Chief Hildebrandt, who left the Edgewood department for Dayton, decided to retire for health reasons.
I was grooming him for the chief's job here when I retire, Elsmere Chief Tim Greene said. He'll make an outstanding chief for Dayton. He's a total professional.
Sgt. Aylor, who will be sworn in Oct. 5 and officially assume his duties Oct. 14, is a Boone County native who lives in Union.
He began his career in law enforcement with Elsmere. We sent him to the academy in Richmond, and he's been with us every since, Chief Greene said.
Mr. Groth said the new chief had several assets that made him attractive to Dayton, including his familiarity with the city's computer system, which is nearly identical to the one used by Elsmere.
He also was involved in the Elsmere department moving to a new building, and we're looking at moving out police from the city building to their own building, he said. We would like to see our police department accredited in the near future, and (Sgt. Aylor) was heavily involved in the accreditation process for Elsmere.
