Thirsty Tristate gets rain

But not enough to end drought Airport total up to .09 inches in Sept.

The Cincinnati Enquirer

A gusty afternoon storm snarled rush-hour traffic and caused a few power outages Tuesday, but the rainfall didn't make a dent in the drought.

“Relief maybe; drought breaker, no,” said Jeffrey Sites, meteorologist for the National Weather Service in Wilmington. “We're going to need 5 to 6 inches to break the drought.”

In less than an hour, the storm dumped varying amounts of rain across the Tristate.

At the Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport, 0.06 inches fell, while Lunken Airport reported 0.23 inches.

Including Tuesday's rainfall, September's total is an anemic 0.09 inches, compared with the month's normal 2.88 inches.

Mr. Sites estimated that the heaviest rainfall — up to 0.75 inches — fell in Blue Ash and Loveland.

Wind gusts of up to 25 mph were reported before and during the storm.

Cinergy reported about 1,000 customers lost power in Delhi Township after high winds hit the area. Outages also were reported for about 1,200 Pleasant Ridge customers, but Cinergy officials were uncertain of the cause. All service was restored by early evening.

More rain is expected todayas a cold front moves in from the West, potentially bringing as much as an inch, said Laura Hannon, senior meteorologist for AccuWeather.

High temperatures should dip Thursday to the low 60s and the upper 60s on Friday.

The weekend is expected to be dry and pleasant with highs in the mid-70s and lows of 49 and 55 on Saturday and Sunday, respectively.
