Mother gets probation for wire-brush bath

        A Newtown woman was sentenced to five years' probation Wednesday for punishing her 15-year-old daughter by bathing her using a wire brush and bleach.

        Rhonda Ludlow, 34, told the judge she was punishing her daughter for running away from home and for hitting her.

        Ms. Ludlow pleaded guilty last month to one count of child endangering.

        Ms. Ludlow's ex-husband, Ronald Gaddis, and his wife, Barbara Clay, also were sentenced to five years' probation after pleading guilty to child endangering. The attorney for Mr. Gaddis, 40, and Ms. Clay, 39, said the two were present at the time but did not participate in the punishment.

Cincy State contracts include pay raises
        Cincinnati State Technical and Community College trustees Tuesday approved a three-year contract with the school's 90 office workers for 4 percent annual pay raises.

        Members of the college's Service Employees International Union-District 925 also will get a $300 lump sum payment during the contract's first year.

        The board on Tuesday also approved 4 percent raises for about 55 administrative staffers who are not union members.

        Trustees approved 4.5 percent raises for the college's 170 full-time professors in August.

Police search for jewelry store robber
        HAMILTON — Hamilton police are searching for a man who robbed the Hamilton Jewelry Store Wednesday about 4 p.m.

        The suspect — described as a 6-foot-4, 250 pound black male in his 30s — walked into the store and looked at merchandise before pulling out a handgun and demanding money. The store owner, Orven Hounchell, also pulled a gun, but the suspect took the owner's gun and beat him with it several times on the head and face.

        The suspect robbed the store and fled on foot eastbound on Symmes Avenue.

        Mr. Hounchell was treated at the scene for cuts received in the assault.

        Anyone with information about the robbery or the suspect should call Lt. Steve Isgro, of the Hamilton Police Division, 868-5811 Ext. 2002.

Fire safety focus of Springdale event
        The Springdale Fire Department's open house, 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Saturday, will include fire safety education shows, fire extinguisher training, demonstrations, firehouse tours and a fire safety smoke house.

        The firehouse is at 12147 Lawnview Ave. For information, call Chief Fire Inspector Michael Hoffman at 671-3576.

Parade, dance part of Wyoming anniversary
        Wyoming continues its celebration of its 125th anniversary this weekend with festivities that coin cide with the Wyoming High School Homecoming.

        At 10:30 a.m. Saturday, a parade will travel up Springfield Pike to Wentworth and down Burns Avenue to the Civic Center at Worthington Avenue and Springfield Pike. It will end at an open-air food court. At 1 p.m., the city will dedicate a historic building plaque at Springfield Pike and Wyoming Avenue. A gala dance will begin at 6 p.m. at the civic center. Clyde Brown Unlimited will provide entertainment.

        Civil War re-enactors will have an encampment outside the civic center.

        Tickets for the dance are $25 and can be purchased at the civic center or the city offices at 800 Oak Ave. Information: 522-3079.

Pets can be blessed and memorialized
        Owners can bring their pets for a blessing at Mercy Franciscan Hospital in Mount Airy on Saturday. The annual Pet Blessing will take place at the front of the hospital, 2446 Kipling Ave., at 2 p.m.

        Afterward, a Pet Memorial Service will be held for those who want to grieve at the Pet Memorial Garden, adjacent to the Mercy Franciscan Holistic Health Center.Attendees are asked to bring new toys or canned food for the Save the Animals Foundation.

        The free services are in keeping with the Oct. 4 feast of St. Francis of Assisi. For information, call 853-5295.

Police: Officer was attacked during arrest
        A Winton Hills man faces an assault charge on a Cincinnati police officer after his arrest on crack possession and criminal trespassing charges Wednesday.

        Damien Tribble, 21, allegely bit the hand of District 1 Officer Mark Burns and punched him in the head during the 1:10 a.m. arrest in the 800 block of Clark Street.

Missing man's truck found in Tennessee
        Authorities in Tennessee have found the 1997 dark red Ford Ranger pickup belonging to Benjamin Oglesby, the Paddock Hills man missing for more than a month, his family said Wednesday.

        But Mr. Oglesby, 73, who has Alzheimer's disease, has not been located.

        His daughter, Cynthia Oglesby of North Avondale, said police told the family the truck was found Saturday.

Parents deny charges of starving, beating
        ELYRIA, Ohio — A husband and wife pleaded not guilty Wednesday to charges they starved and beat their 5-year-old son, who was about half the average weight for youngsters his age.

        Gary Crow, 41, of Oberlin and his wife, Doreen, 33, pleaded not guilty to child endangering and felonious assault during their Lorain County Common Pleas Court arraignments. They were jailed in lieu of $10,000 bail.
