I-71 ramp to 275 to close for weekend

BY TANYA ALBERT
The Cincinnati Enquirer

Drivers northbound on I-71 this weekend won't be able to get directly to eastbound I-275.

The exit ramp is scheduled to be closed from 10 p.m. Friday until 5 a.m. Monday so a 48-inch storm sewer can be put in under the ramp.

The marked detour: Take westbound I-275 to Reed Hartman Highway, Exit 47. Head south on Reed Hartman Highway in Blue Ash to the eastbound I-275 entrance ramp.

“It's going to cause some delays,” said Marvin Thompson, Blue Ash city manager. “But they'll just be minor headaches rather than migraines.”

Drivers can also continue north on I-71 to the Fields Ertel exit, get back on I-71 south and take the I-275 east exit from there. But the notoriously congested Fields Ertel area is also lined with orange barrels now.

The entrance ramp shutdown is scheduled over the weekend because shutting it on a weekday would gridlock Blue Ash. Nearly 117,000 cars exit I-275 at Reed Hartman daily during the week, many headed to Blue Ash office complexes.

“Primarily, we chose to do it over the weekend so it would impact fewer commuters,” said Kim Patton, spokeswoman for Ohio Department of Transportation District 8. “Also, there aren't too many large events going on this weekend.”

Over the past few weekends, crowds were headed to Reds and Bengals games and downtown festivals such as Oktoberfest Zinzinnati.

Worst case scenario has the project finished and ramp re-opened at 5 a.m. Monday, Mrs. Patton said.

“Otherwise Reed Hartman would be a mess on Monday morning,” she said.
