Kids, families practice escapes

Firefighters help with home plans

The Cincinnati Enquirer

Six fire departments will team up with the Princeton School District on Wednesday to help children and their families practice home fire escape procedures.

Firefighters from Springdale, Evendale, Sharonville, Woodlawn, Lincoln Heights and Glendale have been working with Princeton teachers to help elementary schoolchildren come up with home escape plans.

At 7 p.m. Wednesday, the children and their families will practice their plans simultaneously.

Each fire department in the district will select a winner from its schools, and those children will submit their escape plans to the National Fire Protection Association, which sponsors a nationwide program called “Fire Drills: The Great Escape!” The grand prize is a trip for four to Disney World in Orlando, Fla.

This is the second year local fire departments have participated in the 3-year-old “Great Escape” program. Participation last year was 60 percent, said Michael Hoffman, Springdale's chief fire inspector.
