Chicken Soup authors want veterans to share stories
BY JULIE IRWIN
The Cincinnati Enquirer
The Chicken Soup industry is looking for a few good veterans' stories.
Chicken Soup for the Veteran's Soul, the latest in a staggering list of Chicken Soup titles, will feature stories from veterans of all ages. The editors are asking Tristate residents and others to send their stories to be considered for publication in the feel-good series.
The editors ask veterans and their friends and families to e-mail veterans' stories to remember@vetstories.com or call (888) 387-6373. Their Web site is www.vetstories.com
The Chicken Soup formula elicits thousands of stories from regular readers, with a hundred or so selected for each edition. With a mix of inspiration and schmaltz, the books have become a publishing phenomenon.
The original book, Chicken Soup for the Soul, has spawned endless sequels geared toward golfers, pet lovers, couples, teens, mothers and college students. The phenomenon has spread to board games, greeting cards and a television series.
The stories of Tristate residents have found their way into previous editions. Hawthorne Elementary School student Donnell Hill and Indian Hill Elementary School student Ellie Logan saw their work published in Chicken Soup for the Kid's Soul, released last year.
And Dauna Easley of West Chester wrote The Greatest Teacher of My Life, which ran in the 1997 4th Course of Chicken Soup for the Soul. The story was about Mrs. Easley's daughter Kelsey Noel Easley, who battled cancer from the age of 5 and died of the disease in July at the age of 16.
