Reds get politicians' praise for 'inspirational' season
BY HOWARD WILKINSON
The Cincinnati Enquirer
While one local politician was praising the Cincinnati Reds on the floor of Congress, another was proposing a Friday rally for the team on Fountain Square.
On the floor of the U.S. House Tuesday morning, U.S. Rep. Steve Chabot, R-Cincinnati, praised the Cincinnati ball club for its inspirational season.
The Reds, Mr. Chabot said, captured the nation's attention with their unbridled enthusiasm and passion for the game.
Monday night, before a nation wide television audience and 54,621 fans at Cinergy Field, the Reds lost to the New York Mets 5-0, missing their chance to go on to post-season play. But the team, with a record of 96 wins and 67 losses, went much further than most pre-season analysts had expected, and did it on a $33 million payroll, one of the lowest in baseball.
Mr. Chabot said sadly, baseball's economics may not allow this same talented team to return to the field for another run at the pennant, but we will certainly not forget the Cincinnati Reds of 1999.
Forrest Buckley, a Democratic candidate for Cincinnati City Council, proposed that the city host a Friday afternoon rally for the team on Fountain Square to celebrate the season and thank the Reds.
