TV viewers should make contact with 'Roswell'

BY JOHN KIESEWETTER
The Cincinnati Enquirer

Ready for an out-of-this-world TV experience? Then don't miss the premiere of Roswell.

        • Roswell (9 p.m. today, Channel 64): Forget about those other new fall dramas about high school kids obsessed with nail polish, pimples, losing a few pounds or becoming a cheerleader.

A trio of teens at Roswell High School in New Mexico have some legit worries, like not letting anyone know they're extraterrestrials with super powers. So who cares about zits, not that these three have any (Jason Behr from Dawson's Creek; Brendan Fehr from Disturbing Behavior; Katherine Heigl from The Bride of Chucky, Under Siege 2).

Max (Mr. Behr) nearly blows their cover when he miraculously heals the gunshot wound of classmate (unknown Shiri Appleby, who steals the show) by simply touching her tummy. As she says in the opening: “Five days ago I died. After that, things got really weird.”

Roswell, based on Melinda Metz's Roswell High novels, works on multiple levels for viewers of all ages. Teens will like the aliens' cool super powers, such as listening to a CD by putting the disc to an ear. Adults will enjoy the sci-fi mysteries: How come they're only 16? Where did they come from? Were there more aliens? Does the sheriff really have photographic proof of an alien murder in 1959?

Excellent questions. (Somebody call Agent Mulder!) And I can't wait to find some answers. There's just one problem: How can I watch Roswell, NBC's new West Wing, Drew Carey and baseball playoffs at once?
