Police seek deli shooter

BY KRISTINA GOETZ
The Cincinnati Enquirer

COVINGTON — An “open” sign hung in the front window of Kimberly's Korner Delicatessen on Wednesday, the morning after the store was robbed and a longtime clerk shot.

Customers came in and out of the store at Ninth and Main streets that sells groceries, beer and snacks. No one wanted to talk.

Rebecca Wren, 46, was listed in serious condition at University Hospital Wednesday afternoon.

Police were using video enhancement techniques to try to identify the robbers.

The two are described as black men, one 6 feet tall and about 160 to 180 pounds. The other is about 5 feet 8 and weighs about 200 pounds. The shooter was wearing a mask.

Police did not give a description of a third man, the driver of the getaway car.

“The two males asked for some wine,” said Lt. Col. Tom Schonecker of the Covington Police Department. “They didn't serve wine, and it turned into a robbery.

“That was just a premise to get inside. They came in to rob the place, there's no doubt about it.”

No customers were in the store at the time of the robbery.

“Both of them (clerks) were on the floor, and as he was leaving, he shot (Ms. Wren),” Lt. Col. Schonecker said. “He shot her and left. She wasn't doing anything that would have caused him to shoot her.

“Why he did it, I don't know.”

Ms. Wren was lying on her side when she was shot in the cheek. The bullet also went through her arm, police said.

Lt. Col. Schonecker said police records show only a minor theft at the store earlier this year.

Police have released a video tape and hope someone can identify the voice or mannerisms of either man.

“We're trying to get an enhancement of the second perpetrator,” Lt. Col. Schonecker said. “The enhancement of the shooter didn't work very well.”

The shooter was at a bad angle to the camera and put on a mask after he entered the store, Lt. Col. Schonecker said.
