The Enquirer asked 16-year-old Stephanie Safdi, a Seven Hills Upper School junior, to keep a log of her wakefulness and sleepiness throughout a recent school day. Excerpts:
7 a.m. Stephanie's mother turns on the light in her room and tells her it's time to get up. I was tired as usual.
8:15 a.m. School begins.
8:30-9:10 a.m. First bell, Precalculus/honors.
9:15-9:55 a.m. Second bell, Free period. After I got to school, I was pretty wide awake throughout first bell and began to get a little tired second bell (about 9:20 a.m.).
10:15-10:55 a.m. Third bell, AP U.S. History. The height of my sleepiness.
11 a.m.-11:40 a.m. Fourth bell, Spanish 3/honors. I was a little more awake.
11:45 a.m.-12:25 p.m. Fifth bell, English II/honors. Alertness may be dependent on my environment as English class is very engaging.
12:25-1 p.m. Lunch. Lunch always perks me up. . . For the rest of the afternoon, I tend to be pretty alert.
1:05-1:45 p.m. Sixth bell, AP Biology.
1:50-2:30 p.m. Seventh bell, Psychology.
2:35-3:15 p.m. Eighth bell, Chorus.
3:30-5 p.m. Cross country. My cross country practice got me wide awake. . . Eating a snack after school also helps to perk me up.
5:30 p.m. I worked on some light psychology and Spanish homework at the kitchen table while talking to my parents. After dinner, study resumes.
8 p.m. I was really tired . . . I forced myself to concentrate. After about half an hour, I was past the exhaustion.
12:55 a.m. Because I did more procrastinating than I'm used to earlier in the afternoon, I have been working very quickly and effectively since 9 p.m. I also drank a Coke. . . it did help me perk up. Now I feel really wide awake. Actually, I think I feel more alert now than I have at any point during the day. I know that I could go to sleep right now if I tried, but I could also stay up for a few more hours if I wanted to.
1:30 a.m. Stephanie goes to bed.
