Maysville marvels at bridge
BY SUSAN VELA
The Cincinnati Enquirer
MAYSVILLE Local residents, including City Manager Dennis Redmond, are getting a charge from seeing the state's first cable-stayed bridge go up over the Ohio River.
I've seen small bridges go up, but I've never seen anything like this, Mr. Redmond said.
This is more than a construction job. This is a craftsman's job. As far as I'm concerned, there are 50 or 60 artists out there working. This bridge ... will be a noted structure (and) a national landmark.
Bridge construction began in the spring of 1997, about three miles west of this Mason County city, and should be complete in August 2000.
A web of 80 steel cables and two concrete towers, undergirded by seven concrete piers, will make up the new bridge connecting Kentucky and Aberdeen, Ohio. Maysville officials expect the bridge to boost business throughout the area.
