Excerpts from CDC sex education

Excerpts from CDC sex education (labeled “Programs that Work”) that the Ohio Department of Education has used to train teachers to use with middle-school and high-school kids:

        • Condom lessons (age 14 up) — Materials for Session 3: “a varied and plentiful supply of condoms ... latex, lambskin ... novelty condoms such as earrings and key chains and about three or four latex condoms per participant, used for skills practice ... (plus) Acrylic penis models (or standup toothpaste dispensers).” (From “Becoming a Responsible Teen.”)

        • Classroom role-playing — Situations suggested include two females discussing AIDS concerns in a lesbian relationship, a girl convincing a boy to wear a condom, and a boy and girl discussing safer sex with multiple partners. The manual says “no participant should be completely excused from practicing (role playing) skills.” (“Be Proud! Be Responsible.”)

        • Condom comfort — Students practice putting condoms on their fingers and give demonstrations. They're invited “to brainstorm ways to increase spontaneity ... store condoms under mattress, eroticize condom use with partner, use condoms as method of foreplay ... hide them on your body and ask your partner to find them.” (“Be Proud! Be Responsible.”)

        • Group brainstorming — “I will read two statements and ask you to say whatever comes to your mind ... Condoms could make sex more fun by ... and condoms would not ruin the mood if we...” (“Be Proud! Be Responsible.”)

        • Teacher's note — “As you discuss strategies to make condom use more pleasureable, emphasize that you are not endorsing sexual activity between unmarried teenagers.” (“Be Proud! Be Responsible.”)
