MASON Associate Principal Amy Spicher, a 19-year veteran of Mason schools, will serve as interim principal at Mason High School through the end of the school year.
A graduate of Vanderbilt and Xavier universities, Mrs. Spicher replaces Charles Chuck Mason, who is leaving Oct. 31 to become principal at Sycamore High School.
We're fortunate to have someone of Amy's caliber to step in to serve as interim principal, said Superintendent Kevin Bright. Her instructional leadership has been outstanding.
The staff respects Amy. And because she is known, she will bring consistency and stability to an otherwise difficult situation, he said.
This is Mrs. Spicher's second year as associate principal, her fifth year as an administrator at the high school. Mr. Bright said he has been pleased with her work chairing the high school's scheduling committee and planning the so-called Prime Time Wednesday staff development programs.
I'm looking forward to the
challenges, said Mrs. Spicher, who has served as a high school teacher, social studies department head and assistant principal at Mason High School. I really feel I've worked for the best. Chuck Mason is a man of integrity and a man of great vision. I hope to carry forward.
For the next week or so, Mrs. Spicher said, she will be working closely with Mr. Mason to ease the transition. She will also meet with her three assistant principals to realign duties and responsibilities.
In the meantime, a committee will be formed to give input on the qualities the community and staff would like in a new principal.
Early next year the formal search and interview process will begin with the goal of hiring a new principal by June 1.
I'm looking forward to the process, said parent Nancy Smith, who has two high school students. I like the idea of a committee rather than just administrators. I think by waiting until spring there will be a larger pool of candidates for the job. Good candidates probably don't want to leave their jobs mid-year.
We want to take an adequate amount of time to do this, Mr. Carter said. Chuck has been here a long time. We wish Chuck a lot of luck.
