N.KY. SOCCER HIGHLIGHTS

Conley's goal gives Bluebirds OT win

Senior Alison Conley hit a header off a Mica Cline crossing pass with less than two minutes to play in sudden-death overtime to give Highlands a 2-1 victory over Bishop Brossart in the 18th District championship at Pendery Park.

“The sudden-death period was winding down and the referee told me to get my shootout lineup ready,” Highlands coach Bill Thomas said, “I was relieved when Alison scored, I don't like shootouts because you never know what will happen.”

The district title is the third straight for the Bluebirds. Both teams advance to the regional tournament.

        The Bluebirds outshot Brossart 27-8.

        • Simon Kenton 3, Villa Madonna 2 (SO), 17th District at Simon Kenton — The Pioneers captured the title after outscoring Villa Madonna 2-1 in a shootout.

Senior Kristen Cox made four saves in the shootout and Shannon Ollier, the fifth shooter, scored the go-ahead goal.

“We've made great strides after finishing 2-14 last year,” Simon Kenton coach Tim Dietz said. “One of the biggest differences is our attitude. The girls believe in themselves.”

Simon Kenton fell behind 2-0 in the first half. Ollier tied the game in the second half with her 11th goal of the season.

        • Notre Dame 5, Covington Latin 0, 19th District at Town & Country — Laura Wendling, Emily Farrell and Kelley Schabell scored first-half goals for Notre Dame.

BOYS SOCCER: Covington Catholic won its eighth district title in the 1990s and its third straight, beating Holy Cross 3-0 in the 28th District final at Holmes.

Brian McQuade scored on a Drew Kordenbrock assist with 3 minutes left in first half to give the Colonels the lead. Brian Thamann recorded the shutout in his fifth start of the season.

The Colonels added two goals in the second half for the final margin.

        • Boone County 2, Conner 1, Overtime, 25th District semifinal at Grant County — Brent Sullivan scored the game-winning goal off Nathan Brown's assist in the first overtime period.

Kris Weber tied the game for Conner with eight minutes remaining in overtime.

Boone County will face St. Henry in the district championship game tonight at Grant County, 7:30 p.m.

        • St. Henry 4, Ryle 1, 25th District semifinal at Grant County — Senior forward Andy Powers scored three goals for St. Henry, including the go-ahead goal five minutes into the second half on a 30-yard shot after stealing the ball at midfield. Powers has 18 goals on the season.
