NORTHERN KY. SOCCER CHAMPIONSHIPS

Sullivan leads Boone County to title

BY RAY SCHAEFER
Enquirer contributor

DRY RIDGE — Boone County boys soccer coach Shawn Neace thought Thursday's 25th District match against St. Henry was a little strange. But

Neace and the Rebels will take it.

        Senior midfielder Brent

Sullivan scored on a rebound and penalty kick to lead the Rebels to a 3-1 victory for the 25th District championship at Grant County Middle School.

Boone County plays host to Simon Kenton in next week's 13th Region tournament in Florence, and St.Henry will meet Scott.

“It was a weird game,” Neace said. “When you're in the box, we get a lot of those (loose) balls, and you hope you can finish a couple.”

Said Sullivan: “It was just (being in the) right spot at the right time.”

Boone County's win atoned for a 5-4 shootout loss to the Crusaders during the regular season and was just the Rebels' second over St.Henry in the last two years.

The Rebels won their seventh straight game and have scored 29 goals. Sullivan has been a major part of the offense; Thursday's two goals give him 18 for the year and 10 over the last seven matches.

The Rebels (12-7) defeated Conner 2-1 in a shootout Wednesday, and for much of Thursday's opening 10 minutes, St.Henry controlled the ball. Crusaders senior striker Andy Powers' shot in the opening minute just missed wide right.

Then the Rebels wore out the Crusaders.

A 10th-minute direct free kick by Boone County senior defender Joey Northcutt from about 40 yards out led to Sullivan's first goal in the 10th minute. The ball bounced off several players, including St.Henry senior keeper Chris Billiter, to where Sullivan stood about 6 yards away. His shot found the lower right corner of the net.

Sullivan's penalty kick gave the Rebels a 2-0 lead in the 21st minute.

The strangest play came in the 34th minute. Billiter juggled Boone County junior forward Brandon Post's shot from near ly 18 yards out, but Post got the goal because Billiter backed up and over the goal line.

        Goals: BC-Sullivan 2, Post. SH-Heidrich. Records: BC 12-7, SH 15-4.

All-tournament team: Boone County — Brent Sullivan, Brandon Post, Daniel Noble, Jeff Fichner; St. Henry — Andy Powers, Eric Kleiman and Jeff Topmiller; Ryle — John Vandenbemden and Andrew Lageman; Conner — Kris Weber and Seth Michels; Grant County — Austin Ryan and Aaron Melton. • Highlands 3, Bishop Brossart 0, District 27 at Campbell County — Danny Schultz scored two goals, leading the Bluebirds to the district championship.

Both Highlands and Brossart advance to next week's regional tournament at Tower Park.

        • Ryle 1, St.Henry 0, 20th District at Grant County Middle School — Ryle senior forward Julia Herman's goal in the sixth minute — her 19th goal of the season — was enough for the Raiders' second win over the Crusaders this year. Senior midfielder Katie Holtzapfel had the assist.

Both Ryle and St.Henry advance to next week's Fifth Region tournament at Scott.

        Goals: SH-None. R-Herman. Shutout: Aimee Schoborg (11 saves). Records: SH 9-9, R 12-6.

All-tournament team: Ryle — Katie Holtzapfel, Julia Herman, Julianne Laney and Jennifer Knopf; St. Henry — Jenny Merkle, Laurie Franks and Carla Tabeling; Conner — Heidi Payne and Amanda Fields; Boone County — Jessica Chipman and Maria Halenkamp.
