Fresh blood runs Bacon to victory
Spartans win first title in a decade

Roger Bacon won its first district cross country title in a decade Saturday, thanks to the efforts of a group of runners who were in preschool when that last title was won.
Three freshmen stepped up to finish in the top 16 overall in the Cincinnati Division II district championship race at Princeton Junior High School, helping Roger Bacon to its best performance of the year.
Considering we came into the season with virtually no summer training and a bunch of neophytes, this is unbelievable, said senior Matt Moll, who finished fourth overall to lead Roger Bacon's pack. We came from nowhere and basically dark-horsed our way here.
Freshmen John Cappel (seventh), Dan Alexander (15th) and Alex Folz (16th) joined with junior Paul Wagner (9th) in helping Roger Bacon easily outpoint McNicholas.
I'm really proud of these kids. They stepped up and wanted to be champions, Roger Bacon coach Dave Feichtner said. The Spartans were reclassified from Division I to II this year, opening the door for a more competitive showing at districts. The presence of Moll as a leader helped Roger Bacon realize its aspirations.
He's a gritty kid and leads by example, Feichtner said. He's also willing to give direction to these other kids. He's been with me all through his high school career, so he knows what I want done.
New Richmond senior Jamie McCarty was the Division II individual champion.
Madeira rolled to its third straight district title in Division III, placing all seven of its runners in the top 10 despite graduating its top five runners from a year ago.
I think it's a situation where we've established pretty much of a tradition and the kids feel like they have to continue it on, said Madeira coach Bob Kitchen. Three Madeira juniors Andy Kennedy, John Johnston and Kyle Sawyer were the top three overall finishers in the Division III race. Cincinnati Hills Christian Academy, which has also qualified out of district the last three years, took the second of the two team qualifying spots in Division III.
