DeWine holds hefty lead over Cordray in poll

The Associated Press

Incumbent U.S. Sen. Mike DeWine has a big lead over prospective challenger Richard Cordray in a statewide poll on the 2000 race.

An Ohio Poll released Sunday found that 65 percent would vote for Mr. DeWine, 26 percent favored Mr. Cordray, 4 percent mentioned someone else and 4 percent were undecided.

Mr. Cordray, a Democrat who unsuccessfully challenged Ohio Attorney General Betty Montgomery last year, announced Oct. 14 that he will seek the party's nomination. Mr. DeWine is a Republican serving his first term in the Senate.

The telephone poll was conducted from Sept. 17 to Oct. 11, before Mr. Cordray announced his intention to run.

The poll of 606 registered voters from across the state found that 66 percent had not heard of Mr. Cordray. By contrast, 8 percent had not heard of Mr. DeWine.

The Institute for Policy Research at the University of Cincinnati conducted the poll, which had a margin of error of 4 percentage points.
